On
Saturday, May 5th, 2007 the Women’s Rights Committee hosted
its most successful fundraiser so far with the Afrobeat- Rhythms
of Justice Event. The committee’s fifth annual event opened
its doors to nearly 300 people at the Historic Ebell Club in
Los Angeles.
The evening
highlighted HRW’s work to expose the disproportionate
impact of HIV/AIDS on women in Africa, from prevention to treatment.
The emcee, Liz Warner of local radio station Indie 103.1, kicked
off the night with good humor. Women’s Rights Division Executive
Director LaShawn Jefferson flew out from New York to speak at the
event about HRW’s research and advocacy on behalf of women
in Africa, who are particularly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS.
The live and
silent auctions, with items ranging from African art and artifacts
to trips to Paris, Amsterdam, and Martha’s
Vineyard, raised over $18,000 alone. Guests also bought raffle
tickets for the grand prize, a 5-day trip to Hawaii, with airfare
included. Throughout the evening, guests visited the HIV/AIDS advocacy
table to sign postcards in support of the PATHWAY Act, read HIV/AIDS
testimonials from HRW’s website and learn more about HRW’s
work.
Guests also enjoyed appetizers, including some African dishes
and cocktails. The evening culminated with live entertainment from
the high-energy 12-piece Afrobeat music ensemble Albino,
keeping the guests on their feet until the end of the night. As
they departed,
guests were given a gift bag of goodies, including candles, gift
certificates, CDs and an HRW Annual Report.
Through sponsorship
donations, the live and silent auctions, and ticket sales this
year’s event raised over $80,000 for the
Women’s Rights Division and Human Rights Watch’s work
on women’s rights! Many thanks to all of the committee members,
donors, volunteers, and guests for making this event such a great
success!
